Abstrakt: The article informs that about 50 percent of areas of Bangladesh are wetlands, which provide about 80 percent animal protein. Wetlands viz, river, canal, haor, baor, beet, floodplains, lake and coastal estuaries are the repository of the fish and other aquatic resources. As an agricultural economic based country, about 75 percent rural people are dependent on wetlands resources. Wetlands provide livelihood security in the form of a food, household materials, fodder for cattle and kitchen fuel. The haor of Bangladesh is a unique ecosystem characterized with its diversity of wetlands in the forms of rivers, canals, heels as well as kanda along the edges of wetlands. The low-lying area of the haor basin remains inundated for 6-8 months of the year in monsoon while the heels are mostly perennial. The seasonal variation in the haor ecosystem is quite different from any other parts of Bangladesh. The complete haor areas go under 10-30 ft of water during monsoon. Haor livelihoods, become static, people use to pass their days just idle. There are few traditional and subsistence fishers who are busy with fishing with gill and fine mesh nets.
