This article discusses a field ecology investigation that explores the relationship between habitat abundance and biodiversity. The activity was implemented with first graders in a park setting and involved collecting plastic toy arthropods from plots with different amounts of leaf litter. The results showed that plots with abundant leaf litter had the highest abundance and diversity of plastic arthropods. The activity followed a learning cycle model and aimed to teach students about scientific procedures and the importance of biodiversity. The article also highlights the decline in arthropod abundance and species diversity globally and suggests actions that can be taken to help restore arthropod populations.
