Abstrakt:	John James Audubon, for example, is referenced only as a bird killer, absent any nod to his profound influences in 19th-century art and natural history. Birds are widely regarded as nature's most appealing and accessible ambassadors for penetrating the human psyche. The handful of anecdotes about avian extinctions arguably should have included North America's passenger pigeon, perhaps history's worst example of wanton overexploitation by humans.
