The article informs that life-cycle assessment (LCA) and related methods have been in use for more than 25 years. However, many corporations have just recently begin gaining an understanding of the extent to which product stewardship and life-cycle thinking can he used to significantly enhance competitive advantage through cost savings, revenue enhancement, liability reduction, and image enhancement. Linkages between environmental impacts in the product life cycle and business issues are becoming more formal. LCA is a powerful engineering systems approach to understanding the flow of materials and wastes throughout the life cycle of a product or system, from raw materials acquisition to final disposition. |
