The article investigates the possible interference by dimethoate in thyroid function of cockerels. Dimethoate, a moderately toxic organophosphorus pesticide, is known primarily as a neurotoxin and is also known to inhibit metabolic enzymes. In this study, dimethoate was obtained from Rallis India Ltd. Day old male broiler chicks were divided into four groups and were administered orally with dimethoate. On the last day, they were sacrificed, blood of each was collected by cardiac method and their serum samples were stored for the estimation of thyroxine and triiodothyronine. Results showed that while serum thyroxine decreased in all treated groups, triiodothyronine decreased only by the two higher doses of pesticide. |
