Aimed to present a 3 heterotic models hypothesis based on maize germplasms divided into Reid group, non-Reid group and DOM group in north China, inbred lines bred from between either 2 groups. Crosses (5x6) were formed according to the North Carolina design II (NC II) scheme, and popular cultivar "Xianyu 335" served as control. The experiment was carried out in 3 ecological zones during 2-year with densities of 50000, 60000, and 80000 plants per ha, respectively. Excellent hybrid crosses with high, stable yield and density tolerance were screened out. 1 cross of model I, 4 crosses of model II, 2 crosses of model III showed strong heterosis. Results demonstrate clearly that the "3 heterotic groups and 3 heterotic models" hypothesis for maize heterosis application is effective and simple, and Models II and III are suitable for north China.
