Documenting and promoting an interest in local history by libraries often entails the creative use of available resources. Collecting postcards for research, exhibition, and publication value is one excellent way to achieve such a goal. Postcards can be acquired at reasonable cost to establish a discrete collection that can broadly document a specific subject or locale. One academic and one local library in New Jersey have developed postcard collections to graphically illustrate, on the one hand, medical history in the state of New Jersey, and, on the other hand, the history and development of Morristown and the surrounding area. The Special Collections Department at the University of Medicine & Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ) is a history of medicine collection with a special focus on the history of health sciences in New Jersey. The Local History & Genealogy Department at The Joint Free Public Library of Morristown & Morris Township (Morristown-Morris Township Library) specializes in New Jerseyana, particularly of the Morristown, Morris Township, and Morris County area. These two libraries are representative libraries that have benefitted from collecting, preserving, and using postcards to achieve their collection development goals by augmenting the visual record.
