This paper describes the development of automation at the Patent Trademark Office of the federal government. The document capture, digital imagery conversion software provided by the Computer Microfilm Corporation, were the start of the Automated Patent System. Backfile capture process details are reviewed, including the new policy of creating two copies of every patent on archival tape.
