Popis: | 107 The salvation ritual for the dead is one of the important parts of the procedure of funeral ritual in Taiwan. Yet, as time progresses and the society develops, religious funeral rituals change as well. In this thesis, the changes of religious funeral rituals among Hakka people in Hsinchu is explored, with observation centering on Zhudong Township and Da-Ai area, in the southeastern mountains of Hsinchu. It is observed that conventional religious funeral rituals in the regions of the present case have been mainly Buddhist services, and today, however, are predominantly the performance of scripture-chanting choirs. This thesis thus includes two subjects of exploration: 1. What are the implications of and differences between the two religious rituals—services and scripture chanting? and 2. Is there connection between the shift from services giving to scripture chanting and the momentum of urban development and information propagation? In respect of the first question, the implications of and the difference between the two different kinds of religious rituals are explained by means of both graph and text. That is followed by the exploration, through field survey, in the reason of shift from traditional services giving to scripture chanting. This thesis comprises Chapter 1, Introduction, which delineates motive and objectives of the research, scope of research, methodology, limitations, and literature review; Chapter 2, describing the origin, migration to Taiwan of Hakka people, and their beliefs and custom; Chapter 3, exploring the procedures and meanings of Buddhist services and scripture changing; Chapter 4, which involves the investigation into the difference between Buddhist services and scripture changing, and the reason of the increase and decrease of their respective popularity; and Chapter 5, Conclusions as well as recommendations to the current Buddhism, in hope of this traditional culture being able to live on. |
