This study is conducted to develop a smart hydroponic system with automated control and soilless cultivation technigues. The proposed system is integrated with various sensors, including those for detecting pH, electrical conductivity, lighting, and water level. In addition, plant growing lights, peristaltic pumps, and submersible pumps are controlled using a fully automated scheme. This system provides the illumination, pH values, and nutrients necessary for hydroponic plant growth, and moreover, its soilless cultivation method avoids pests and plant diseases engendered by regular soil and deters the use of pesticides. Accordingly, the proposed system is highly applicable to a nontoxic cultivation environment in line with the current farming trend. The smart hydroponic system features a human–machine interface that is user-friendly and easy to use. The system does not require management by designated personnel and is therefore suitable for being used by the general public. This study conducted on-site tests and verified that the proposed system accelerated the plant growth rate by almost one fold. Therefore, this system can serve as a crucial solution for resolving problems concerning food shortage, pesticide abuse, and labor shortage.
