In recent years different groups and individuals have begun to reevaluate and reconsider Taiwan under Japanese rule. The author of this thesis has also received a variety of information, which mainly included photos and postcards representing the streetscapes from that period as well as essays advocating the preservation, demolition and reuse of buildings built during that period. Affected by this information, the author has a wonderful imagination of the modern architecture from the period of Japanese rule. At the same time, the author has been deeply touched by the conditions of these buildings. Thus, by studying the buildings from the period of Japanese rule in tandem with Asian gouache paintings, which is containing Japanese aesthetics as creations. This will be the focus of this thesis. The first chapter explains the motivation, purpose, scope, and methods of the research. The second chapter explores the past and the present by discussing the characteristics unique to the tropical colors, the theoretical foundation of Japanese aesthetics, the style of the buildings, and the site visits to the buildings that are still standing. In the first section of this chapter, the author references art-related literature from the period of Japanese rule so as to define the characteristics unique to the tropical colors and reevaluate the significance of these characteristics with respect to Taiwan's climate. In the second section, the author provides an explanation of certain Japanese aesthetic concepts, such as darkness (In-ei), essence (Iki), transience and imperfection (Wabi-sabi), and explains how to understand and use these concepts. In the third section the author provides examples so as to explain the architectural style of the period of Japanese rule. In the fourth section, the author describes the experience of visiting the buildings of the Japanese rule period so as to establish a preliminary understanding of the buildings. The author also emphasizes the importance of cultural heritage in this section. The third chapter compares buildings and images of buildings from the period of Japanese rule. The comparison mainly focuses on images from Taiwan, architectural elements, and the unique characteristics of the medium. The first section of this chapter explains the important elements of Taiwan architecture. While considering pictures of architecture from the period of Japanese rule in tangent with modern buildings with iron-sheet metal roofs and old-fashioned multi-story buildings, the author explores the important elements of Taiwan architecture. In the second section of this chapter, the author focuses on the repetition, symmetry, and illumination of certain architectural elements. The third section of this chapter analyzes the characteristics of the medium while considering how to properly communicate tactile qualities, texture, and architectural techniques through images. The fourth chapter uses concepts of "parallel time and space", "fetters", and "rebirth and regeneration" to analyze the style and form of certain works. The fifth chapter is a conclusion that summarizes the claims and viewpoints of the author and briefly describes future creative plans and development directions.
