Improvement on product development model to enhance design change efficiency: A study case on bayonet head

Under the trend of increasing global competition, product development often faces the need to make rapid adjustments in adapt to customer or market demand. However, the product development process is complicated and full of many uncertainties. How to design and change the details in a dynamic environment and maintain the design quality after the change is an important issue. Therefore, this study aims to develop a set of processes and models that can be used to design products with frequently changing requirements, as well as to assist designers in quickly responding to that kind product development environment. This study uses the “bayonet head design” as an example to discuss how to filter these uncertain requirements, possible influencing factors, and how the design parameters are passed during the development process, as well as in combination with “Requirement analysis” by multi-criteria decision-making method (MCDM), Computer Aided Engineering (CAE), Taguchi experiment process to establish a product development model (Abbreviated as RCT-PD-Model). Finally, the RCT-PD-Model and traditional experience design methods were used to conduct experiments respectively on the bayonet head design and verified the differences, as the results shown that RCT-PD-Model can significantly improve the development efficiency and reduce cost, it is also helpful to be applied during the practical products development process and academic research.
