The Study of Regional Difference for Cancer Incidence in Taiwan

Cancer is a leading cause of death in Taiwan, and the cancer incidence rate is increasing year by year. Consequently, Taiwanese people pay close attention to cancers and cancer insurance. Moreover, regional differences of habits and customs, medical treatment, and urbanization cause regional differences in cancer incidence and classification of cancers. Therefore, this study, which researches on regional differences in cancer incidence and trend relationships, uses method of standardization and joinpoint regression. The cancer registry says that based on crude incidence rates in 2010, the top 10 types of cancer in Taiwan are female breast, liver, lung, prostate, colorectal, oral, colon and anal, gastric, corpus uteri, and cervical cancer respectively, and according to study result, the following cancers have regional differences obviously in Taiwan:female breast, liver, lung, prostate, oral, gastric, corpus uteri, and cervical. Beside, different cancer show different incidence trend, this research finds that the following cancers are trending upward:liver, colorectal, oral, colon and anal, female breast, corpus uteri, and cervical. Those with a downward trend are gastric and cervical cancers. Incidence of liver cancer rose from 1991 to 2004, and fell firm 2004 to 2010. In conclusion, this study provides information for insurance companies to adjust their risk management and marketing models.
