Due to western learning and the May Fourth Movement, Chinese culture flourished in the late Qing Dynasty and the beginning of the Early Republic. Numerous art and literature groups were founded, and the circulation of published books was impressively massive. The impact of foreign cultures was strong, and consequently influenced the application of arts at that time. As a form of arts, a reform in bookbinding was carried out. A intellectual, Ye Ling-fang (1905-1975), began to design a variety of book images. Deeply motivated by the decadent and avant-garde aesthetic styles, we can find that Ye made a change in his style of designing, which echoed the contemporary arts. Since Ye's illustrations were a microcosm of the times, we can see how foreign arts in China was accepted and used by observing his illustrations. However, Ye Ling-fang is more well known as a writer than a designer. Therefore, previous studies on his works mainly focus on his literary works. This article tries to go beyond the stereotypes and aims to find more clues about the cultural atmosphere, publishing situation, and the attitude towards foreign cultures in the era through Ye Ling-feng's bookbinding works.
