Effective islanding detection is crucial for power grids that incorporate renewable energy generation. When islanding occurs and if the changes in voltage and frequency are not detected in time, damages to household appliances will be made due to voltage fluctuations. Mistaking that the grid is disconnected while renewable generation still powers the grid, the maintenance workers are exposed of the risk of being electrocuted. Therefore, an islanding prevention device must be installed for all distributed generation systems. Many methods of islanding detection have been proposed in research papers in the past. However, there are certain drawbacks to those methods. Islanding may not be detected by existing methods when the current and voltage are in the same phase or the frequency remains in normal range when islanding occurs. In this paper, performance comparison is carried out between different detection methods that combine non-autonomous Chua’s circuit, various fractional-order chaos systems and extension theory. The voltage signals of non-autonomous Chua’s circuit are analyzed based on the fact of chaos theory being a special case of nonlinear system theory. The property of small errors being amplified by a chaos system is also used in order to facilitate extension recognition on signal analysis.
