This study employs the Industry/Organization Economics (I/O Economics) and applies the PESTEL (Political, Economical, Socio-cultural, Technological, Environmental, and Legal) framework and the Five-Forces Model to analyze the effects of macro/general environment on virtual community websites and the competitive intensity in this industry. The study also addresses the Resource-based View (RBV) and applies the IPOM (Input-Process-Output-Management) framework to examine the distinct capabilities and resources of the two major firms ---Facebook and LINE ---in this industry. Finally, the Competitive Dynamics Perspective was applied to analyze the series of actions initiated by Facebook and LINE so as to identify the dynamic nature of this industry. The research is one of the first studies, if any, that systematically examines the process and dynamics of the virtual community industry. Implications and limitations of the findings are discussed.
