Background: Clinical cancer nurses play an important role in implementing the patient safety culture in healthcare units or organizations, and thereby building the attitude, knowledge, and behavior of the staff towards patient safety. Objective: The study aims to understand the nurses’ perceptions towards the patient safety culture in a Cancer Center by evaluating and comparing their attitude in patient safety. We discuss the associations between the nurses’ perceptions toward patient safety culture and the implementation of patient safety. Methods: We used the Safety Attitudes Questionnaire to measure the nurses’ attitude in the department of nursing in a Cancer Center; we gave out 417 questionnaires and got 398 back, out of which 392 were deemed valid averaging a valid response rate of 94%. The IBM SPSS Statistics 20 version was used for data processing; frequency, percentage, average, standard deviation, t-test, analysis of variance (ANOVA), scheffe method, correlation analysis and regression analysis were the statistical methods employed. Results: Out of the 6 dimensions for the nursing staff’s attitude towards patient safety, 「Teamwork climate」showed the highest score and the「Perceptions of management」the lowest; 「Teamwork climate」was shown with the highest score for positive attitude and the「Perceptions of management」the lowest. The results also showed that the demographic factors and nature of work make a difference in the nurses’ attitude towards patient safety with the variables being age, service unit, seniority, and employment categories. The result showed that those oldest and the youngest in age, the most and the least senior in seniority, in the managerial position, working in the ward, and those with the full-time positions have a more positive attitude towards patient safety. Aside from the highly positive patient safety culture shared by the nurses, our result also indicated all three patient safety performance indicators of PICC, Port-A, SSI showed low infection rates. Conclusions: Although our results showed the nurses of this cancer center scored higher in positive attitudes for all six dimensions, but there are significant gaps between the units. To keep a highly positive attitude consistent among them all, further discussions and efforts are needed.
