Parenting stress, family support and life adjustment in mothers of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder Abstract The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship among parenting stress, family support and life adjustment in mothers of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder. The study subjects were mothers living in Taipei city, new Taipei city and Taoyuan city. Two hundred and eight mothers participated and completed the “Parenting Stress Scale”, “Family Support Scale” and “Life Adjustment Scale.” The data were analyzed by the SPSS Window 18.0 software. The results were as following: 1. The overall parenting stress of mothers experienced was above the average, the subscale of “external environment” is higher, and “parent-child dysfunctional interaction” was lower. 2. The overall family support of mothers experienced was above the average, the subscales of “emotional support” and “instrumental support” were higher, and “informational support” was lower. 3. The overall life adjustment of mothers experienced was above the average, the area of “family adjustment” and “social adjustment” were higher, and “individual adjustment” was lower. 4. The results indicated that there were no significant differences in the variables of children's education stage, children’s disability degree and mother's education level on the life adjustment of mothers. But there was significant difference in the variable of household monthly income on the life adjustment of mothers. 5. Pearson correlations indicated that “household monthly income” and “family support” have significantly positive correlations with the life adjustment of mothers. The subscales of “parenting stress” had partially negative relation with the life adjustment of mothers. 6. The hierarchical regression analyses indicated that the “parent-child dysfunctional interaction” and “informational support” could effectively predict the “social adjustment” of mothers. The “parental distress”, “emotional support” and “informational support” could effectively predict the “individual adjustment”, “family adjustment” and “the overall life adjustment” of mothers.
