Popis: | 102 After the mid-Qing Dynasty, the authority allowed the Han Chinese to move to Taiwan. In a prosperous economic and political environment and an increasingly stable society, public temples, private ancestral temples, and local gentry residences continued to be built, and paintings, an important method for decorating the buildings, became one of the emblems and features of traditional buildings in Taiwan. In the early periods, traditional building paintings primarily served to lengthen the life of wooden building components. Hundreds of years later, building paintings have evolved into a creation of handicrafts and arts, through which painters infuse their unique and meaningful concepts into their pattern designs. This research focused on the traditional paintings on the temples, houses, and ancestral temples in Central Taiwan. Signatures of the paintings were compared to establish a context and genealogy of painters in Central Taiwan. Moreover, styles and techniques of said paintings were analyzed using classical design aesthetics. The results are as follows: (1) Pi-Ma-Jou-Huei (a painting technique that applies tung oil ash and linen to the wood surface to make the surface smoother and prevent it from rupture) was not involved in the traditional paintings made before the Qing Dynasty. This technique became popular in the period of Japanese rule and is practiced in the present time. (2) Painting techniques experienced three major changes, and the changes in techniques and pigments have undermined the apprenticeship of painters. Through field surveys and interviews, this study directly probed into the origin, context, and genealogy of traditional paintings in Taiwan. We constructed a genealogy for painters in Central Taiwan, and we further investigated the transitions and context of traditional arts and handicrafts. |
