A Study of the Influence of Applying the Issues-Centered Approach in Law-Related Education Course on the Fifth and Sixth Grade Students' Citizenship

The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of “Applying the Issues-Centered Approach in Law-Related Education Course” on the fifth and sixth grade students’ citizenship. This study conducted a pretest-posttest quasi- experimental design. The 117 students from fifth to sixth grade of an elementary school were selected and divided into two groups. 58 students in the experimental group were received the “Applying Issues-Centered Approach in Law-Related Education Course” for 16 classes in 8 weeks, while the other 59 students in the control group were maintained traditional teaching method in the same curriculum. The research tools for the present study were “The Inventory of citizenship for Children, including “The Inventory of Civic Knowledge for Children”, “The Inventory of Civic Skills for Children”, “The Inventory of Citizen Responsibility for Children” .The data were analyzed by “Independent samples t test”, Paired-Samples t Test” and “ANCOVA” for analysis. The results of the study are summarized as below. 1.“Applying the Issues-Centered Approach in Law-Related Education Course” do upgrade the citizenship of children in the experimental group who got low grade by the “The Inventory of Citizenship for Children” before the curriculum. 2. Comparing the traditional teaching method, the Issues-Centered Approach is more effective in promoting the children’s Civic Skills. Therefore, this study suggests elementary school Applying the Issues-Centered Approach in Law-Related Education Course” so as to promote the children’s citizenship and civic skills.
