The Effects of Phonics Instruction and Phonological Awareness Training on Higher Graders' English Learning Achievements

Popis: | 102 The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of phonics instruction and phonological awareness training on higher graders’ English capacity on sound-word correlation and accuracy on word pronunciation, also to understand the changed circumstances of students’ learning method and attitude. This study employed quasi-experimental method, two classes of fifth graders were participated and the experimental curriculum took 16 courses within 8 weeks. During the experimental curriculum, the researcher wrote teaching diary after each course. And after the experimental curriculum, all the participants took a paper test on English capacity on sound-word correlation, an oral test on accuracy on word pronunciation and the researcher invited 6 students in experimental group to have semi-structured interviews to understand students’ changes on English learning method and attitude. ANCOVA was used to analyze students’ learning achievements on sound-word correlation and accuracy on word pronunciation. The results of this study were as follows: 1. There is no major difference between experimental group and control group on capacity on sound-word correlation. 2. Experimental group has higher achievement on accuracy on word pronunciation. 3. Experimental group did change their way of learning English. They’re positively affirmed phonics and phonological awareness training and this two learning strategies did motivate their learning attitude. |
