A study on the influence of electronic medical records system on the performance of physicians' outpatient work

The objectives of this study were to investigate the influence of attitude, subjective norm and computer self-efficacy on electronic medical records system behavior and individual performance. Sixty nine samples in a regional teaching hospital were collected for statistical analysis. According to the report of U.S. Medical Society on the stage of development of electronic medical records, which is on the stage of health care provider based electronically medical records, also known as electronic medical records (EMR) stage, the medical staffs would consult the computer-based medical records to make a diagnosis or providing health care. Understanding the information technology for individual on improving job performance has become increasingly important as this kind of technologies were introduced into hospitals as many as possible. This study had found there were statistical differences on behavioral beliefs to the electronically medical system behavior; however, a statistical influence on the subjective norms to individual performance was concluded. Adopting the electronic medical records system did improve individual performance. The academic contribution of this study was to collect the valuable viewpoints from the first line of ambulatory care physicians in medical institutions and combined with objective information system to progress the statistical analysis where the physician’ clinic time in the beginning and the end, number of patients’ electronic medical records were used as an index to evaluate the outpatient operating performance. Besides, this study also verified that the electronic medical records system behavior had showed empirical value for promoting individual performance.
