The traditional design for primary/secondary chilled water system is to have cooling water pumps and primary pumps with constant flow rate and secondary chilled water pumps with variable flow. For energy conservation concern, retrofitting inverters on cooling water system and primary loop to be variable water volume (VWV) system is conducted in this study. Furthermore, in order to reduce the power consumption of auxiliary equipment, the control program has been modified to reduce the water flow in accordance with the demand of cooling load and chillers. The test results reveal the reduction of energy consumption is 5 to 17% in the high-temperature chilled water system and 3 to 25% in the low-temperature chilled water system depending on weather conditions, running time, chiller capacity and operation strategy. The energy conservation is tremendousespecially due to 24-hour operation year round operation in the electronics factory.
