By Christmas Day in 2011, I finally completed my graduation production, The Dresser, in which I played Sir. I expect this essay records everything I’ve experienced and realized- both the complete and incomplete parts. Starting from my determination to accept the challenging role, the whole production took no less than three months. Simply having a vague picture of the role at first, I could only appeal to imagination and fancy, and I tried various interpretations of Sir freely. As I was required to build up a character seriously, I adopted theories, analysis, experience and deduction in order to get closer to the role. Unlike comic books, there’s no “Ultra Combo” in acting for anyone to take down an arch-rival with one strike. As a consequence, I set many goals and expected myself to reach Sir step by step. I encountered many difficulties in shaping the character, but I knew I had to embrace them to crack them. Many of the problems were solved during rehearsals while some of them are still haunting me. To evade from the problems, sometimes I even twisted them purposely and took easier ways out. I suppose I have to take responsibilities for every choice I’ve made. It’s not a matter of right or wrong, but about improving and approaching perfect. In the battle with the role, I met with setbacks and obtained valuable aids from decent men. What I experienced off the stage is as wonderful as Sir’s life. In addition to all the studies and researches for the role, the course of thought developments, self-reviews, feedbacks from audience and new ideas of mine are all high-lights in this performance report. I hope my introspection and records of the production do mean something.
