When using refractometer to measure the refractive index (RI) of an object, errors may occur due to different viewing angles or eye-eyepiece distances when users are using naked eyes to read the RI value from the display. A new measurement always needs to re-adjust the viewing position as well as scaling ring, resulting in measurement instability. Using webcam to substitute the eyepiece in a refractometer is the goal of this thesis; webcam doesn’t have any fatigue problem. Webcam provides the image of refractive index of an object through the eyepiece; the RI value is computedS via the help from Matlab’s image processing toolbox. The reading errors caused by human’s naked eyes are reduced, and the measurement accuracy is increasing. We utilize the calibration block to simulate the RI of an object; the RI is obtained through the experiment. Offset compensation is introduced to reduce the measurement errors. The range of measurement errors is distributed in (-0.02%, 0.01%). The accuracy of RI measurement is therefore increased.
