Advances in medical technology has made the population structure gradually turn into an aging society. Chronic diseases, whose successful control relies on precise adherence to prescriptive medication, are the main diseases in the elderly population. Considering the declined cognitive abilities of the older adult, the thesis aimed to investigate the effect of game-based e-learning on improving the older adult’s adherence to prescriptive medication behavior. 15 subjects aged over 65 participated in 3x2 split-plot factorial experiment. Learning media was a within-subject factor that consisting of digital games vs. traditional paper prescriptions. Prescription complexity was a between-subject factor which consisted of difficult, medium, and easy levels. The results indicated that the digital games significantly outperformed the traditional paper prescriptions for all the three complexity levels. With respect to the complexity effect, only the difference between the difficult and easy levels was significant. A user experience questionnaire indicated that the older adult favored the digital games learning over the paper prescriptions in terms of entertainment, ease of learning, attractiveness, and other subjective criteria.
