The Use of Pragmatic Markers in Native and Non-native Chinese Oral Narrative

Using the work of Schiffrin (1987) and Fraser (1996, 1999, 2006) as a theoretical foundation, this study uses discourse analysis to investigate the uses of various pragmatic markers in native and non-native Mandarin Chinese narrations. In particular, this study investigates the use of the markers 然後ránhòu, 結果jiéguǒ, 呢 ne, 那nà, 好hǎo, and對不對 duì bu duì. After a thorough overview of the research already published on these markers as used in native speech, an analysis is done of their use in a collection of native and non-native narrations of the story The Three Little Pigs. The marker 然後ránhòu is found to have five different discourse marker uses in the native narrations: topic succession use, additive use, change of voice marker, consequence marker and filler. Two of these – the change of voice marker and filler – were not found in the non-native narrations. The marker結果jiéguǒ is found to have two discourse marker uses, the linking use and response marker, neither of which were used by the non-native narrators. The marker 呢 ne is found to have 4 pragmatic marker uses: pause marker, modal particle, emphasis marker and focus marker. Only the focus marker use is found in the non-native narrations. Five discourse marker uses of the word那nà were found in the narrations of the native-speaking participants in this study – topic shift marker, evincive, motive and action marker, turn quotation marker and succession in time marker. Only three of these (topic shift marker, evincive and quotation initiation marker) were found in the non-native narrations. Three discourse marker uses of好hǎo were used by the native narrators in this study – topic closure marker, evincive and response marker. Two uses were also found in the non-native narrations in this study – consent marker and topic closure marker. Two discourse marker uses of the marker 對不對 duì bu duì are found in the native narrations. The first is that of boundary marker, the second is that of attention maintainer. Finally, the implications of these findings for the field of Chinese language teaching are described and suggestions are given for changes to be made to current common practices.
