Decision Support Systems for Nursing Diagnosis Based on Gordon's Function Health Patterns

A nursing diagnosis is a standardized statement about the health of a patient for the purpose of providing nursing care. Nursing diagnoses are developed based on data obtained during the nursing assessment. Because a new nurse or student nurse lacks for nursing knowledge and experience, it is difficult to make an appropriate nursing diagnosis for nursing care plan. The purpose of this study is building a decision support systems for nursing diagnosis based on Gordon’s function health patterns. Specific aims are (1) to establish the database of 11 functional health patterns’ characteristic keywords, negation phrases, medical-nursing terminology, the ranking of nursing diagnosis. (2) to define numerical data. (3) to solve the problem of negation phrases by the algorithm called NegEx. (4) to convert medical-nursing terminology. (5) to rank nursing diagnosis. Totally 181 clinical nursing record documents were collected and used to test the accuracy of the system. Kappa coefficient is used to test the ranking of nursing diagnosis for system and expert. The poisson distribution is used to find the words between characteristic keywords and negation phrases. The results of the words between characteristic keywords and negation phrases are six words. Kappa coefficient is 0.573 and the accuracy of the system is 82%. This system has completed the database of 11 functional health patterns’ characteristic keywords, negation phrases, medical-nursing terminology and nursing diagnosis ranking.
