Sun Wu was not only an outstanding strategist, but also the greatest genius in military area. His famous work—“Sun Zi --The Art of War”—is the first systematic book on the art of war in China ancient times. It’s also the most early and penetrating book on military strategy in the world. “Sun Zi --The Art of War” includes war''s cognition and principles of troops training. The most important of all are the strategic concepts. Sun Wu created a set of systematic, the most influential strategic concepts by generalizing war experience since Huang Emperor, specially the Spring and Autumn Period Time. The utmost status of “Sun Zi --The Art of War” on military strategy disables the other similar works to get the same status no matter in the past or now, in China or abroad. There are so many famous sayings in “Sun Zi --The Art of War”, such as: ”Know yourself and know the enemy, you won’t be defeated in hundred battles”, ”Make the enemy surrender without fighting”, “Control the enemy, instead of being controlled”, “Avoid the enemy''s strength and strike his weakness”, ”Speed is the essence of war”, “All warfare is based on deception”, and “Use spies”, etc. These famous sayings are not only known by modern people, but also seen as the utmost guidance by many strategists in the previous dynasties. Besides surveying the main strategic concepts of “Sun Zi --The Art of War” afresh, this thesis will explain the close relations between “Sun Zi --The Art of War” and "Sun Bin --The Art of War” with examples, and make the entire “Sun’s doctrine” to be more complete and comprehensive. The content of each chapter is as follows: (1) Chapter 1: “Introduction”. This chapter briefly introduces the motivation, goals, methods, objects, and process of this research. Also, it explores the main concepts. (2) Chapter 2: “The background of period in Sun Zi’s life”. This chapter enumerates the correlative data from ancient books such as “Zuo Zhuan”, “Guo Yu” and ”Shi Ji”, etc, and explores that “Sun Zi --The Art of War” is actually created based on the period Sun Zi was in. (3) Chapter 3: “Sun Zi’s life, work, and his strategic concepts”. This chapter explores Sun-Wu’s life story, and verifies the editions between bamboo slips and printed one of “Sun Zi --The Art of War” mutually. Finally, it explores the main strategic concepts of “Sun Zi --The Art of War”. (4) Chapter 4: “Compare “Sun Zi --The Art of War” with "Sun Bin --The Art of War” in strategic concepts”. This chapter compares the strategic concepts of “Sun Zi --The Art of War” we’ve classified with the ones of "Sun Bin --The Art of War” unearthed in underground, and explains the close relations between “Sun Zi --The Art of War” and "Sun Bin --The Art of War” with examples. (5) Chapter 5: “Conclusion”. This chapter synthetically concludes the main strategic concepts of “Sun Zi --The Art of War”, and the comparison in strategic concepts between “Sun Zi --The Art of War” and "Sun Bin --The Art of War”. Also, it explains the value and the worldwide influence of “Sun Zi --The Art of War”, and provides reference for the academic circle.
