The catalytic converters (Three Way Catalyst) have been employed by automobiles to solve major pollution problems caused by unburned hydrocarbon, carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxides. Using a combination of cerium oxides, alumina oxides as well as noble metals such as platinum and palladium, the Three Way Catalyst can conduct a diversified catalytic reaction to resolve the above-mentioned pollution problems. However, the roles of Phosphorous-related species have not been delineated yet. In this study, a structural and mechanistic study of the reaction between Ce2(SO4)3 and H3PO4 are conducted using thermal treatments under different gases monitored by analytical techniques including X-ray Powder Diffraction, Thermo-gravimetric analysis, Infrared spectroscopy as well as Scanning Electron Microscopy. The reaction mechanisms and final products are proposed and discussed.
