The idiom is one of the essences in Chinese language with characteristics of a traceable origin, a unique four-word format, and a double meaning. In other words, hidden behind every Chinese idiom, there always exists a double meaning based on an allusion. As a result, a thorough understanding of a Chinese idiom can not be achieved without learning the allusion behind it because the relation between its face value, derived meaning, and the allusion can be viewed as multiple connections between different thought groups. This aspect is shared with the theory of metaphor developed in Western culture, in which a metaphor is interpreted as a presentation of the logical way of thinking or a mode of connecting different thought groups. In this thesis, we study the Chinese idioms from several different viewpoints. First, we apply the Western theory of metaphor to the analysis of Chinese idioms. We find that every Chinese idiom has a double meaning including its face value seen from the words and the derived meaning hidden deep inside, and an allusion is just the key ingredient to connect these two thought groups, which lays the foundation of the Chinese idiom system. Furthermore, we discuss the art values and the aesthetics types produced by the skill of using metaphor in order to reveal the integrity of the Chinese idiom. Finally, the application of this study to the Chinese teaching is also addressed.
