The Study on Correlations among Home Literary Environment, Class Reading Environment and Reading comprehension in Elementary Schools

The purposes on this study were as follows: (1) to investigate home literary environment, class reading environment and reading comprehension in elementary schools, (2) to explore the difference between home literary environment and reading comprehension under different background variables, (3) to analyze the correlations among home literary environment, class reading environment and reading comprehension. Through questionnaire survey, a total of 584 sixth-grade students of the public elementary schools in Taichung county participated in the present study. The collected data were analyzed by computing the mean, standard deviation, one-way ANOVA, person product-moment correlation and stepwise multiple regression. Based on the data, the findings of this study were summarized as follows: 1.The situation among home literary environment, class reading environment and reading comprehension in the sixth-grade students was good generally. 2.In terms of different home literary environment, there was a significant difference in family social economic status (SES). The High-SES students’ was superior to the Middle-SES and Low-SES students’. Besides, the Middle-SES students’ was superior to the Low-SES students’. 3.Regarding the reading comprehension, there was a significant difference in family social economic status (SES). The High-SES students’ was superior to the Middle-SES and Low-SES students’. 4.There was positive correlation between the home literary environment and reading comprehension of the six-grade students. 5.There was positive correlation between the class reading environment and reading comprehension of the six-grade students. 6.The reading comprehension of the six-grade students could be partially presumed by the home literary environment and class reading environment. According to the results, there were some suggestions can be provided to parents, teachers, the educational authorities and future researchers.
