Steel structure construction has gradually gained its importance owing to the fact that Taiwan is geographically located at earthquake regions. Its main material of construcual steel has also been upgraded and updated as time goes by. Therefore, most structure designers request that backing strip used for electric welding should correspond to the material of main structure, adding that it will influence the intensity of connections. However, this thesis has its difficulty regarding actual practice. Currently, domestic manufacturers that have research and development of steel do not produce backing (Backing Strip is thereafter abbreviated as Backing). The solution mostly ends up purchasing from downstream manufacturers and that greatly limits the availability of backing. This research aims at evaluating the stretch ability of welded backing by using Instron 8801 testing machine. The experiment goes till the essential material is destroyed and that helps realize the correlation of stretch and breaking. The result concludes that breaking position will not happen at the welding parts as long as the welding job is well done. The material of backing will not cause any breaking at the welding parts. The material used in the research corresponds to physical quality in the yield stress and ultimate stress.
