Although the stage two(grade 4-6) of the ”Grade 1-9 curriculum Guidelines” emphasizes the ability of reading and writing in Taiwanese language, the different usage of characters for thesame word in Taiwanese language textbooks has caused some problems in communication. The purpose of this study is to analyze the character usage in five different editions of Taiwanese textbooks. Specifically, this research attempts to reorganize character types / tokens, word types / tokens, the overall high frequency characters / words and the compatibility between the words appeared in these Taiwanese language textbooks. It is hoped that the findings of this study can be useful for the promotion of the 400 words list recommended by the Ministry of Education (MOE). Hopefully, children can have the opportunity to immerse in Taiwanese literacy since childhood. This research uses literature analysis, Han-Romanization mixed Taiwanese word segmentation system, descriptive statistics, comparison and induction respectively to analyze five editions of Taiwanese language commercial textbooks (from volume 1 to 12) published in 2007 academic year for the elementary schools. I intend to find out the distribution of character types, character tokes, word types, word tokes, and the different words used to express the same meaning. I also intend to find out the overall high frequency characters, high frequency words, and the compatibility between the words appeared in these textbooks and the 400 words list recommended by MOE. The findings of this research can be summarized as follows: With regard to the character tokens in each version of textbooks from maximum to minimum, the top one is Khong-hian (6111) and the last is Tsin-ping (4263). About character types, the top one is An-kho (1300) and the last is Tsin-ping (1001). About word tokens, the top one is Khong-hian(4132) and the last is Lam-it(1301). As for the compatibility of characters with the 400 words list recommended by the MOE, the top one is Han-lim(28.12%) and the last is An-kho (23.69%). The percentage of words which recommended by MOE, the top one is Han-lim(11.44%) and the last is An-kho (9.74%). Besides, the word types/tokens ratio in first volume of Taiwanese language textbooks(Khong-hian, Lam-it and Tsing-ping) is more than the ratio in first volume of the Mandarin textbooks. It’s inadequate for the children to learn so many new words, as the time allocated for learning Taiwanese is only 1/5 compared with Mandarin. Ten criteria are used to evaluate these textbooks, the results show that Tsin-ping (42), Khong-hian (41) and Han-lim (39) have higher scores. It is hoped that this study can contribute to the improvement of Taiwanese textbook writing and enable people (especially teachers) to choose more proper textbooks, and offer the base for other researchers to do advanced research.
