Aim- This paper is a report of a study to explore the relationship between physical activity and quality of life for patients after coronary artery bypass graft surgery with metabolic syndrome. Background- Cardiovascular disease is the second leading causes of death in Taiwan. The metabolic syndrome will increase coronary artery disease rate higher than normalized 1.5 till 3 fold. Coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) is the best way to treatment coronary artery disease. In Taiwan, there were approximately 6313 peoples received CABG surgery in 2007. The previous researches found that post CABG patients who had regular physical activity gain better quality of life in the long term outcome. However, no research investigates the physical activity and quality of life in post CABG patients with metabolic syndrome. Methods- A cross-section research design and purposive sampling were conducted in this study. Three instruments were used: Modifiable Activity Questionnaire, Short Form 36-Health Survey, and a demographic questionnaire. Seventy patients were recruited from a medical centre in Taiwan. The data were analyzed by using SPSS, Version 17.0 software, and data analysis included percentages, means, standard deviations, correlation coefficients, and forward regressions. Findings- The results showed the quality of life was significantly positive related to gender, age, BMI, marital status, the person who arrangement meals, alcohol status, and blood pressure levels. The blood pressure is negatively correlated to physical activity. Quality of life was correlated with the total physical activity and age. Multiple regression analysis showed that total MAQ and age could explain the 15.1% variance of the in physical component summary of quality of life and 13.6% in mental component summary of quality of life. Conclusion- The result will help nurses understand the physical activity and quality of life in the patients who were post coronary artery bypass graft with metabolic syndrome. Base on the study result, the nurses can design a specific interventions to promote physical activity level and help the patients to achieve optimal quality of life.
