A Study for the effect of L1 Use on Students’ EFL Learning Shu-Ting Chuang Graduate Institute of Elementary and Secondary Education National Chiayi University Abstract This study investigates the effect of the use of L1 by the teacher on students’ EFL learning. The participants were two eighth- grade EFL classes in Taiwan. The observation group was taught in both English and Chinese (L1) in EFL classroom, and the control group was taught in English only. The participants took two English proficiency tests in the beginning and end of the academic year in 2005.A T-test and ANCOVA were conducted to explore whether the teachers’instructional language affected the student’s target language learning outcome in listening, reading, writing and speaking. The major findings in the study are presented below. 1. The control group performs better than the observation group in listening and speaking since they received more input and have more opportunities to produce the spoken form of the target language. 2. The observation group had advantage in reading, because the L1 provided by the teacher assists in clarifying the main points of the reading. The two groups did not show significant difference in writing. The results of the study suggest that teachers should maximize target language input in listening and oral class. For reading and writing class, L1 assistance in clarifying meanings and grammar explanation could serve as scaffolding to promote students’ advance in target language proficiency.
