Popis: | 97 Based on Stebbins’ Serious Leisure theory and Driver and Brown’s preferences of environment attributes from the framework of Recreation Demand Hierarchy, this study was to investigate the relationships between rugby players’ serious leisure characteristics and their preferences of field environment attributes. The amateurs and hobby rugby players were selected as the respondents of this study for a questionnaire survey in both paper and website approaches. The convenient sampling method based on snowballing sampling principle was applied to collect 264 effective samples for statistical analyses. Exploratory factor analysis method was adopted to obtain eight factors of serious leisure characteristics and seven factors of preferences for rugby field environment attributes, respectively. Then, the result of the canonical correlation analysis for these two sorts of factors has shown that their overlay index has not reached the critical point, which means the correlation is meaningless. However, when the sample were separated into student and social groups, then only the social group has shown a significant positive relationship between serious leisure characteristics and seven factors of preferences for rugby field environment attributes. In addition, no matter for the analyses of whole sample or separating into student and social groups, the respondents all strongly agreed with the subculture of their rugby groups and matched the sport spirit of rugby football as well as what Stebbins called the characteristics of strong identity. Therefore, if the serious leisure theory is applied to rugby activity, then the players’ social status and playing age should be the antecedent factors to indicate that social (non-student) players with long playing age seem to match the serious leisure characteristics more than student players with short playing age do. It also indicates that the social (non-student) players match what Stebbins said the career characteristics of serious leisure more than student players do. Another point is that rugby is not only a competitive sport but also is a very social interactive one as reflected by players’ preferences of field environment attributes being highly focused on the social interaction among players as well as between players and spectators or audiences. According to the study results, discussion and field observation, some suggestions were also presented for the rugby field management and relevant topics for future studies as well. |
