Antenna Selection Schemes for MIMO/MIMO-OFDM Communication Systems in Correlated Channels

Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication systems with multiple antennas at both transmitter and receiver ends are able to improve substantially the system-capacity and transmission reliability of the wireless communication. However, the multiple RF chains associated with multiple antennas are known to be quite costly. The use of the antenna selection is a low-cost alternative to achieve many of the advantages of MIMO communication systems. In the thesis, the problem of antenna selection at both transmitter and receiver is addressed in the correlated channels. In the thesis, the correlation-based selection (CBS) and uncorrelation-based selection (UBS) schemes based on the norm and correlation between rows and columns of the channel matrix are employed to select the antenna subset. The Gerschgorin circle (G-Circles) based selection and the Gram-Schmidt (GS) based antenna subset antenna selection method are introduced as well. Then we propose a modified Gram-Schmidt (MGS) based selection algorithm. In the following, antenna selection schemes for multiple-input multiple-output orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (MIMO-OFDM) systems are addressed in the broadband correlated channels. Finally, simulations are conducted to compare the performance of these antenna selection algorithms in various correlated channels.
