A Study of the Working of Gender Politics in Elementary School Campus Life

This research is base on the southern Disney Elementary School as the case study, adopts feminist approach, employs mixture of dominant qualitative research and less dominant quantitative methods, collects data by means of participant observations, depth interviews and documentary analysis, take grounded theory as the basis for encoding and dealing with raw data as well as statement analysis, and explain the research contextual in a narrative way. In the research, nine teachers participate in the individual interviews and twelve high-grade students participate in focus group interviews. By means of observations and deeply-interactive dialogues with the interviewees, this research goes for further investigations of the implication in hidden curriculum in three aspects consisting of the planning and utilizing of campus space in gender regime, teaching staff’s division of labor in the organization, and the implement of students’ informal curriculum, to show the way how the six dimensions, namely, related gender regime, expectations of gender roles, gender division of labour, gender hierarchy, masculinity/femininity and gender curriculum, work and present types of ideology and the process in which how school shapes the genderalization. It is hoped by examining the role that the elementary school plays in genderalization, to give insights of the students’ and teaching staff’s environment and provide considerations for the school to eliminate types of gender ideology.
