A STUDY OF THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE TRANSFORMATIONAL LEADERSHIP AND LEADERSHIP EFFECTIVENESS OF DIRECTORS IN ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS IN TAIPEI COUNTY

The purpose of this research is to study the relation between the transformational leadership and leadership effectiveness of the directors in the elementary school to find the realistic factors which affect leadership effectiveness of the directors with an aim of improving the leadership effectiveness of the directors and facilitate the business of school. This research mainly bases on questionnaire surveys. First, the principal tool of this study, “questionnaire of the relation between the transformational leadership and leadership effectiveness of the directors in the elementary school in Taipei County” is organized according to the research goal and structure. Secondly, the range of the study includes the elementary schools of Taipei County. Excluding the pretesting school, 70 schools and 644 teachers with administrative duties are picked by stratified sampling to fill out the surveys. Among 644 surveys, 494 surveys are returned with a return rate of 76.7% and a effective return rate of 65.7%. The result of this survey is analyzed with statistical techniques including, means and standard deviations, t-tests, one-way ANOVA, product-moment correlations, and step-wise multiple regressions by SPSS 12.0 for windows. Firstly, an analysis of the transformational leadership and leadership effectiveness of the directors in the elementary school at present is carried out. Then, the difference of the transformational leadership and leadership effectiveness of the directors with variant background variables perceiving the relation between the transformational leadership and leadership effectiveness of the directors in the elementary school and the prediction of leadership effectiveness based on the transformational leadership are discussed. The conclusions are as follows. 1. As far as the transformational leadership of the directors in the elementary school in Taipei County, the performance of leadership charisma is the best. The performance of the intellectual stimulation is insufficient. Altogether, the transformational leadership of the directors in the elementary school in Taipei County at present is adequate. 2. With refer to the leadership effectiveness of the directors in the elementary school in Taipei County is concerned, the performance of achievement of organization goal is the best. The satisfaction of work and the satisfaction of leadership are in the second place. Altogether, the leadership effectiveness of the directors in the elementary school in Taipei County at present is adequate. 3. There is an apparent difference in teachers with administrative duties perceiving the transformational leadership of the directors with variant teaching years, directors’ marriage, directors’ teaching years, directors’ administration years. 4. There is an apparent difference in teachers with administrative duties perceiving the leadership effectiveness of the directors with variant age, teaching years, directors’ marriage, directors’ teaching years, directors’ administration years. 5. There is a significant positive correlation in each aspect between directors the transformational leadership and leadership effectiveness. 6. The transformational leadership of directors is an effective predictors to leadership effectiveness. leadership charisma turns out to be the best effective predictor on the whole. Finally, the researcher brings up some suggestions for directors, supervisors in the elementary school and educational organization according to the conclusions of this study and related documents so as to be a reference for improving administrative management and future researches.
