An Action Research of STS Approach to Green Energy Teaching for Fifth Graders in the Elementary School

This study was taken STS approach to green energy teaching by action research. The purpose of this study was (1) to develop a STS green energy teaching plan; (2) to know the influence of senior graders in the elementary school about learning green energy and the attitude of green energy after STS green energy teaching. Thirty-three fifth graders in one of the elementary schools in Wanhua District, Taipei City were selected. Through the teaching video recording, observations of teaching, the teacher’s teaching log, work sheets of students, and interviews of students, to know about the impact of the students. The major results of this study are (1)Through the observation and reflection of teaching, we developed the STS green energy teaching plan. It contains seven activities “energy and society,” “an introduction to green energy,” “the story of wind,” “solar energy,” “windpower and hydropower,” “energy conservation,” and “the new world of green energy.” The instruction consisted over six weeks. (2)Through the survey and learning sheets of students,we found that most students had advanced in the knowledge of green energy. Most students understood the relations of green energy, from three points of view “science,” “technology,” and “society.” The influence of “technology and energy” was most remarkable. Students thought that we could solve the problems of energy crisis and energy pollution by technology of green energy. (3)Through the green energy attitude scale, more than 90% students got higher scores in the green energy scale after teaching. The scores reached a remarkable difference in statistics in the three areas of the green energy scale, “energy and society,” “renewable energy,” “energy conservation,” especially in phase Ⅲ “energy conservation”.
