A Survey of Canine Oral Health Condition in Taiwan

The objective in this survey was to investigate the factors related to canine oral health condition by using dental charts and questionnaires. One hundred and twenty anesthetized dogs during surgical operation in the Nation Taiwan University Veterinary Hospital were included in this study. The collected data was statistically analyzed with the degree and classifications of dental calculi and gingivitis. Gingivitis scores elevated with the calculi score and the number of teeth missing. Dental calculi and gingivitis are more severe in male, small, old, without dental chewing materials or the submandibular lymph nodes enlarged dogs. And gingivitis scores are more elevated in the dogs had eaten home cooked food or table food. Gender neutralization, body condition, dietary habit, oral hygiene care and more than one dog family were not statistically significant associated with dental calculi and gingivitis.
