The wireless mobile ad hoc network (MANET) has received intensive attention recently. In the MANET, if the MAC protocol is based on a single-channel model, it is subject to collision when network traffic load is high (which might further lead to serious Hidden/Exposed Terminal problems). Lots of papers utilize a multiple-channel model as a solution to alleviate these problems. Multi-channel MAC protocol can improve the throughput of MANET by allowing multiple nodes to transmit concurrently on different non-overlapping channels. The usage of multiple channels can provide the benefits of reducing the probability of collisions, decreasing the contention on medium access, and adding the Qos support. However, new challenges such as the multi-channel hidden terminal problem or deafness problem are raised in the multi-channel MAC protocol design In this thesis, we review the related problems on single-channel and multi-channel environments, respectively, and present an efficient multi-channel protocol to increase network performance. The proposed protocol has the following features: 1.A dedicated control channel is used to negotiate and collect channel usage information among nodes. 2.A counter-based channel selection strategy is used to balance channel load and reduce the probability of contentions and collisions among nodes. 3.A local negotiation strategy is used to reduce the channel re-negotiation overhead during data retransmissions. We thoroughly simulate the proposed protocol in the MANET environment. The simulation results show that our protocol can provide higher performance than other ones, especially in throughput, average delay, and channel utilization.
