As the Internet flourishes over the past decade, the need for high-speed network is increasing. IEEE 802.3an task force is now developing new Ethernet Standard - 10GBase-T. 10GBase-T is the next generation of 1000Base-T and provides 10Gbps data transmission. Currently, most of the 10Gbps Ethernet is developed with fiber medium due to the high bandwidth of fiber. However, the cost of fiber and optical device is still too high to be popular. Therefore, the goal of 10GBase-T is to support 10Gbps transmission over twisted-pair copper line and the hardware cost of 10GBase-T is much less than optical Ethernet. The goal of this thesis is to lower the cost of 10GBase-T transceiver. We analyze the cost of baseband DSP of 10GBase-T system. We find the echo and NEXT cancellers are the dominant components of the overall baseband DSP. Due to the long impulse response of echo and NEXT and high operating speed, implementing echo and NEXT cancellers requires the adaptive FIR with hundreds of taps. Hence, we proposed two new low cost architectures of 10GBase-T transceiver. One is echo shortening. A Shortened Impulse Response Filter (SIRF) is used to shorten the echo impulse response to reduce the cost of echo canceller. The other is joint shortening. The SIRF is used to jointly shorten impulse response of echo and NEXT. Unfortunately, the SIRF will corrupt the channel response. The cost of equalizer increases and performance of equalizer is degraded. However, the cost overhead is not high and the performance degradation is less than 1dB. Finally, from system simulation results and fixed-point analysis, the proposed echo shortening and joint shortening can meet the specifications of 10GBase-T system. Moreover, the cost saving of the proposed echo shortening and joint shortening architecture is 12% and 35% compare to the conventional architecture.
