The Interpretive Evaluation of 「Just One of the Players」Exhibits in the Main Visitor Center of Taroko National Park

Exhibition is important interpretive facility for national parks. One way to evaluate effective exhibits is the behavior of visitors, which helps the exhibit planner to understand the connection between the conveying messages and visitors in the exhibitions. However, there are few related studies in exhibit evaluation for exhibit planners in the national parks. In this study, visitors to the 「Human and Nature」Exhibition at Taroko National Park were selected in random. A population of 281 visitors was unobtrusively observed to get the attracting power and holding power of each exhibit, as well as the behavior of visitors. In addition, visitors were interviewed with a questionnaire when the observation was over to understand their preference in each exhibit. A total of valid questionnaires were collected. The collected data were further analyzed by SPSS and then discussed quantitatively and qualitatively. Based on the quantitative and qualitative data analyses, the findings of the present study are summarized as follows: 1.Visitors to the “ Human and Nature” exhibition are mostly first visit and non- resident in Hualien, about 71% out of data body. 2.The average visiting time in “ Human and Nature” exhibition is about 3 minutes and 43 seconds, and the longest timing is about 27minutes. 3.Interactive, realistic, experiential, and aesthetic exhibitions get more visitors attracting power. Interactive exhibitions attract more holding power, as well as some specimens and written displays. 4.Characteristics of each display techniques leads different type of visitor behaviors. According to the findings, we could say that “Human and Nature” Exhibition is effective. The following are some suggestions for exhibition planners. 1.The involvement of interpreters in guiding exhibition enhances the interpretation satisfaction. Written displays in exhibition can be more friendly considering needs of target visitors, creating an interpretive impression. 2.Animal specimens can be displayed contractively in exhibition, rather than just putting on the shelf, trying to integrate visual experiences with personal concept. 3.An exhibit planner should be considerate, concerning every single key details in exhibition and the individualities of every visitors. 4.An exhibit planner integrates ideas/suggestions from people involving in exhibition development and constructs them into exhibition framework. 5.Button-Push display methods can conclude more choices can enhance holding power.
