The Effects of Commentary on the Audience's Perceived Violence and Enjoyment in Television Sports

Popis: | 91 The commentator’s commentary emphasizing high level of violence of the game in television sport may affect the audience’s perceived violence and enjoyment. This effect may be mediated by the audience’s gender and experience of sport participation. This study, based on the elaboration-likelihood model, examed the effects of commentary, sport experience, and gender on the audience’s perceived violence and enjoyment. Participants in this study were 120 college students watching a basketball game with commentary either emphasized the players’ hostility and violence or gived neutral comments. The results showed significant team – commentary and team - gender interactions in perceived violence. Audience’s perceived violence of the game was affected by the content of commentary, with no experience effects found. In terms of perceived enjoyment, only commentary - experience interaction was significant. Experienced audiences reported higher level of enjoyment with commentary emphasizing violence, while non-experienced audiences found neutral commentary more enjoyable. |
