The purpose of this thesis is to use Mobile Agent to support a Distributed Heterogeneous Database Management System (DHDBMS) for information retrieval. With the characteristics of across-platform, autonomy and free migration, Mobile Agents make DHDBMS efficient in distributed database access, especially to loosely coupled databases on the non-specific Internet. Distributed database accesses usually generate a large amount of interactive messages and data transmission among databases and result in the increase of network traffic. The increasing traffic lowers the system efficiency seriously. This thesis takes the advantage of using only local communications between Mobile Agents and local DBMS to eliminate unnecessary interact messages and data movements among distributed databases. The theme of this thesis focuses on how to translate one data access query into different transactions on different sites and arrange operation orders to every transaction. A Mobile Agent carries these transactions is then launched into the network to perform database access services on specified spots. Finally, the mobile agent also delivers the outcome of these operations when it returns to the original birthplace. Further, this thesis also investigates data transparency. It makes the users seem using local database and aren’t aware of how data are distributed over different databases. This implementation of the prototype system is based on the MACE (Mobile Agent Carrier Environment). Consequently, the whole skeleton is designed according to the structure of Agentlet-Serverlet protocol of MACE. The thesis contributes in extending and promoting the ability and efficiency of distributed database management system technology available.
