Design and implementation of a half-bridge inverter system with an analog controller and a full-bridge inverter system with a digital controller, which are used to improve steady state performance and dynamic response of a UPS system, are presented in this thesis. The K-factor control scheme is adopted to design the analog controller. It provides a systematical design procedure for designing a controller to satisfy the specifications. In addition, the self-tuning fuzzy control is adopted to design the digital controller. It is based primarily on the experimental planning method, which is widely used in quality control. By performing matrix experiments via orthogonal array, the scaling-factors of the fuzzy controller can be determined. With both of the design methods, the controllers can be designed efficiently and systematically. Following the analysis and design of the both controllers, a prototype of each inverter with capacity of 1 kVA is implemented. Both controllers of the inverters are implemented on a 16-bit microcontroller 80196MC. Simulation and experiment results have demonstrated that the output voltage regulation can be controlled within 1% and total harmonic distortion (THD) at output voltage can be reduced below 3% under linear load condition. They have also verified the feasibility of the designed controllers.
