The organizational culture of the YMCA was greatly influenced by the Young Men''s Christian Association in North America as the former was sponsored and founded by the latter. Therefore, the interactive process and relationship between the YMCA in China and Late Ch''ing society is analyzed in terms of Sino-American cultural interaction. The initial stage of the YMCA''s development encountered the increasingly drastic conflict between China and the West. The YMCA was able to accommodate itself to the contemporary situation with its particular organizational culture and developed into a nationwide organization. It became one of the fastest growing Christian missions at that time, as well as one of the most structural and influential youth associations. In general, the activities and its influence cover two aspects: the propaganda of holistic education and advocating of social reform. How these two aspects were promoted and accepted in late Ch''ing''s society were explored in the dissertation. The cause, approaches, and consequences of the cultural confluence of the YMCA''s and late Ch''ing society will be studied in terms of the three levels of the association''s organizational culture (cultural core, values, and organizational structure) so as to understand the interactive relationship of the YMCA''s culture and late Ch''ing''s culture, i.e., the process and result of the interaction between the two kinds of culture (those of theYMCA and late Ch''ing) from the following three levels: 1. Analysis of the cause of the cultural interaction between the YMCA and Late Ch''ing''s cultures from the principles, notion, and idea (culture core) of the YMCA''s early development in China; 2. Analysis of the approaches through which the YMCA adapted to Late Ch''ing''s situation from the strategies, aims, and standings (values) of the YMCA''s early development in China; 3. Analysis of the consequence of the YMCA''s accommodation to the social trendof Late Ch''ing society from the organizational nature and arrangement (organizational structure) in the YMCA''s early development in China. The above analytic levels constitutes the main development and structure of the chapters of this dissertation, which is applied to analyze the main theme of the dissertation: The YMCA''s successful expansion at a time of drastic change in Chinese society results from its unique organizational culture which could accommodate itself to the social trend of late Ch''ing and thus brought cultural fusion in the aspects of education and society. Consequently, the main theme and structure of this analysis is to provide a different interpretation of the influence of the Sino-American cultural interaction on China''s modernization and thus expand the scope of this field. |
