The theme of this thesis is to develop the radio paging con trolled demand side management system utilizing the radio paging system as the communication links. The proposed demand side management system consists of three subsystems including 1. radio paging controlled load management system, 2. radio paging controlled real time price transmission system, and 3. radio paging controlled interruptible load shedding transmission system. In this thesis, two hardware modules associating with the aforementioned three subsystems will be developed. The functions of these two hardware modules are described as follows. 1. Load control unit (LCU): The LCU will receive the control commands transmitted from the control center via the radio paging system. Upon receiving the radio signals, the LCU will first demodulate the signals and then decode the demodulated control commands. The shedding and restoration of the air conditioning facilities connected with the LCU is controlled according to the control commands. Therefore, the LCU is developed as the local control interface at the customer side for the radio paging controlled load management system. 2. Signal transceiving unit (STU) The STU is to receive and record the real time price transmitted from the utility company via the radio paging system. The STU is available for the user retrieving the selling electricity prices in the past period of time. The STU is also able to receive the shedding commands to the utility company’s interruptible customers as well as the central air conditioner customers. These customers are able to send the acknowledging signals back to the utility company through the STU and public service telephone networks. (PSTN) Therefore, the STU is developed as the local signal receiving unit at the customer side for both the radio paging controlled real time price transmission system and the radio paging controlled interruptible load shedding transmission system.
